The leaves are falling, and all is turning inward. It’s a good time to reflect on who has come before us, thus you are cordially invited to the Ancestor Supper. Please come celebrate our Ancestors and Dearly Departed with food and fire, at the Charlottesville Eco-Village’s Lochlyn House on Saturday October 29th and into the dawn of Sunday October 30.
This is a family friendly event where we will share foods and stories from our ancestral lands. Feel free to invite and bring anyone who wants to participate.
This is a very special night to share with community. Singing and eating will be abundant, and for those staying late into the night, snuggling! A Reverent Fire will be tended from dusk til dawn.
Please make and bring a dish/drink to honor your Ancestors and/or Dearly Departed. This could be a favorite dish of theirs, or a dish from your ancestral lands, to the best of your knowledge. Let your ancestors guide your cooking by not tasting it during preparation. Let them be the first to taste it that evening – it will be perfect! Remember a serving utensil.
In the storytelling session of the evening, you are invited to share the story behind your dish and anything else about your ancestors or dearly departed. After your story your dish will be passed around for all to eat. All food that is not eaten by us will be offered to the fire/compost bin/goats as food for our ancestors by sunrise Sunday morning.
What to Bring:
- Your dish or drink, plus a plate, bowl, mug, eating utensils for yourself ~ this is all you really need, the rest are optional ~
- Musical instruments
- Blankets and pillows for lounging, and sleeping gear so you can still rest as needed while the fire is being tended for you
- Songs or poems or art! From your family members, ancestors or ancestral lands, or just ones you love, to share with us all during the evening
- Photographs or other treasures you’d like to share on a table of remembrance to honor our ancestors. Also anything else to decorate the space—beautiful materials, flowers, candles
Please arrive between 4:30 and 5:00 pm
to help decorate and prepare the Reverent Fire, settle into the space and set up your food dish, altar items and snuggle space. We will have fun together relaxing, slowing down and preparing for the ceremony! Also feel free to arrive later if you are not able to be there for the opening ceremony.
You are welcome to stay the night to be there for the closing of the ceremony at dawn.
However, please feel free to leave when you must.
If you wish to come, but cannot, we would like to offer you the opportunity to have your ancestors honored. Light a candle at sunset and reflect on those who came before you. And/ or email an ancestor note with their names, a little story, a bit about them, where they came from, anything you want, to Erin at firstname.lastname@example.org. Indicate whether you wish to have your ancestor note read out loud or kept private. All notes will be burned in the Reverent Fire that evening. Ancestor notes must be received by Friday Oct 28.
Signs will direct you where to go at the Eco-Village (480 Rio Road East, Charlottesville, VA).
